Acton grandmother dies days after water rescue that also saw child die

A 75-year-old grandmother died after being rescued from the water of Nara Park in Acton on Friday in an incident that also killed one of her grandchildren.

Around 1:30 p.m. on Friday, Acton police received a report of a possible drowning in Nara Park, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney’s Office.

The preliminary investigation suggests the 75-year-old woman and her three grandchildren were visiting the park when she and an almost-2-year-old entered the water, the DA’s office said.

The family members “were not dressed in bathing suits, and it appears they were not there to swim,” the DA’s office said.

The other children called for help, and lifeguards, camp counselors, and bystanders were able to remove the pair from the water. Lifeguards began performing CPR and other life-saving measures, the DA’s office said.

The child was transported via medical flight to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he died, officials said.

The grandmother was also transported to a hospital, where she later died, the DA’s office confirmed Monday.

The identities of the victims have not been released.
