Three major food establishments in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore – HeyDeli Pizza, BigBasket and Social Indore – have had their food licences suspended after inspections found serious food safety and hygiene violations.
The action was taken after the establishments allegedly failed to make the required improvements or provide satisfactory responses to improvement notices issued by the Food Safety Administration.
The licences were suspended through an order dated August 31 under Section 32(2) of the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, and Rule 2.1.8(1) of the Food Safety and Standards Rules, 2011.
COCKROACHES, RUSTY UTENSILS FOUND AT HEYDELI PIZZA
The Food Safety Administration had inspected Shri Harikrishna Group, which operates HeyDeli Pizza at Gemini Mall, Scheme No 54, Indore.
During the inspection, cockroaches were reportedly found in the kitchen. Officials also found rusty utensils being used and food being prepared in burnt oil.
The inspection also found inadequate cleanliness in the kitchen and storage areas, open dustbins and a lack of records related to pest control.
An improvement notice was subsequently issued to the establishment. However, according to the administration, no satisfactory response was received within the prescribed period and the required improvements were not adequately demonstrated.
BIGBASKET FLAGGED FOR STORAGE, DOCUMENTATION ISSUES
Food safety officials also inspected Innovative Retail Concepts Private Limited, which operates BigBasket at B-7, Scheme No 54, PU-4 Commercial in Indore.
The inspection found raw materials stored in an unorganised manner, with food and non-food materials kept together.
Officials also found that medical fitness certificates of employees and other required documents were not available at the premises.
The establishment was issued an improvement notice, but the administration said a satisfactory response and compliance with the required improvements were not received even after the stipulated period.
VEG, NON-VEG FOOD KEPT IN SAME FREEZER
At Social Indore LLP, located at C21 Business Park opposite Radisson Blu Hotel on MR-10, officials found vegetarian and non-vegetarian food products being stored in the same deep freezer.
The establishment was also unable to produce reports from a recognised laboratory for the testing of water and food products during the inspection.
Authorities subsequently issued an improvement notice, but said the establishment failed to provide a satisfactory response or demonstrate the required corrective measures.
FOOD BUSINESS ORDERED TO STOP
Following the inspections and the lack of satisfactory compliance, the licensing authority suspended the food licences of all three establishments with immediate effect.
The establishments have been directed to remove perishable food items from their premises and immediately stop all food business operations during the suspension period.
The administration warned that continuing food business while the licences remain suspended would amount to a violation of the Food Safety and Standards Act and could lead to further legal action.
The Food Safety Administration said inspections and statutory action against food establishments would continue to ensure compliance with food safety standards and protect public health.
