The Kolkata Police has registered an FIR against former West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, among others, for “violating” a Calcutta High Court order during a foundation day of the party’s student wing, Trinamool Congress Chhattra Parishad (TMCP), programme held on Cathedral Road in Kolkata.
According to the police, the case was registered on August 28, 2026, under Sections 61(2), 223, 125(a), 132 and 285 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case was registered on the basis of a written complaint submitted by Sub-Inspector Apu Baidya of Hastings Police Station after examining the conditions imposed by the Calcutta High Court for holding the meeting at Cathedral Road on Friday.
A statement by Kolkata Police accused the Trinamool Congress chairperson of entering into a criminal conspiracy by provoking her supporters during the programme, resulting in the crowd pushing aside the barricades, jostling with police personnel “deployed for maintaining law and order, creating a chaotic situation and obstructing the vehicular movement of one flank of Cathedral Road”.
The Calcutta High Court has directed that the rally be held from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., but the programme went beyond the scheduled time. During the gathering, the Trinamool Congress chairperson was heard repeatedly saying that she would finish the event by 3 p.m. The rally, however, went beyond 3 p.m., as the former Chief Minister could not finish her speech in time.
Trinamool Congress spokesperson and Beleghata MLA Kunal Ghosh said that the FIR was politically motivated. “We tried to finish the rally in time. But if more people turn up, it is the responsibility of the police to maintain the situation,” he said.
The Kolkata Police had filed a similar FIR against the Trinamool Congress chairperson for allegedly violating Calcutta High Court’s orders during the party’s Shahid Dibas rally at the same venue on July 21.
