President Donald Trump is putting public schools on notice over how they address gender identity with students, saying schools could face serious consequences for telling children they are “trapped in the wrong body.”
During a White House back-to-school event Monday, Trump said, “Every public school in America is now on notice,” and described telling a child they are in the wrong body as child abuse.
The remarks are part of the Trump administration’s broader effort to limit how gender identity and transgender issues are addressed in K-12 schools. The administration has also pushed for greater parental involvement in decisions involving children and has taken steps aimed at restricting what it describes as gender ideology in education.
Trump’s comments, however, do not mean that a new federal law has automatically classified such statements by school employees as child abuse. His remarks represent his administration’s policy position and warning to schools, while the legal consequences for individual schools or educators depend on existing laws and specific government actions.
