LSU football’s Lane Kiffin poised to sign ex-Ole Miss star just cut by Browns

LSU football could soon make history, as the team is looking to sign a player that once played with the Cleveland Browns.

The LSU football team is looking to add another player for the 2026 college season. New LSU head coach Lane Kiffin is looking to sign former Ole Miss star Dae’Quan Wright, per ESPN.

“History: the Browns are waiving tight end Dae’Quan Wright and, if he clears waivers, he has an agreement in place for the 2026 season to play for LSU, per agents Drew Rosenhaus and Kyle Lincoln,” Adam Schefter posted to X, formerly Twitter. “Wright is believed to be the first player who could play for an NFL team, and then go back to play in college.”

This is certainly a strange development. Wright played for Kiffin, when the head coach was at Ole Miss. He could be setting a new trend in college football.

“There are a handful of players currently in training camp, or players who have already been cut and were on camp rosters, who are currently in the transfer portal. Dae’Quan Wright now is the first to fully commit to a college team again,” Schefter added in a separate post.

Kiffin is about to enter his first season at LSU. He famously left Ole Miss for the Tigers during the 2025 season, as the Ole Miss football team was getting ready for the College Football Playoff. That move set off a firestorm of criticism against Kiffin.

Wright’s addition could cause even more problems for Kiffin. That is because it could cause problems in the SEC.

On3 has reached out to SEC for comment as this would break the league’s intraconference rules,” Pete Nakos of On3 posted to X.

Time will tell how this all shakes out. If Wright is able to join LSU, it would not be out of the question for other NFL players to go back to college.

LSU football starts their 2026 season against Clemson. That game is scheduled for September 5.
