Security agency manager held after guard alleges repeated rape at Malda Medical College

A security guard deployed at Malda Medical College and Hospital has accused a security agency manager of repeatedly raping her and threatening her with serious consequences if she disclosed the alleged abuse.

The accused, identified as Shubhankar Laskar, is the facility manager of the private agency responsible for providing security services at the hospital. Following a complaint filed by the woman, police arrested Laskar and launched an investigation into the allegations.

According to the complaint, the woman alleged that she was sexually assaulted multiple times at the security agency’s office located near the hospital’s diarrhoea ward. She also claimed that the accused threatened her to prevent her from reporting the incidents to anyone.

The victim lodged a complaint at the English Bazar Police Station in Malda on August 16. Acting on the complaint, police initiated an inquiry and subsequently arrested the accused.

Laskar was produced before a court on Wednesday, police said. Investigators are now examining the allegations and gathering evidence as part of the ongoing probe.

The incident has triggered concerns over the safety and security of personnel working within the premises of the state-run medical institution.

Responding to the development, Malda Medical College and Hospital’s Medical Superintendent-cum-Vice Principal (MSVP), Prosenjit Bor, said the arrest was made based on a rape complaint filed with the police.

“The police have arrested the accused on the basis of a rape complaint. I do not know the details of what exactly happened. The matter is under police investigation,” Bor said.

Police officials have not yet disclosed further details about the case but confirmed that the investigation is underway.

The case comes amid renewed scrutiny of workplace safety and protection mechanisms for women employed in hospitals and other public institutions. Authorities are expected to record statements from relevant witnesses and review evidence as part of the investigation.
