Rory McIlroy has sparked concern after admitting he is “so far away from where I need to be”.
The Northern Irishman had a tournament to forget in the FedEx Cup St Jude Championship, finishing third-to-last.
It was the world No2’s first appearance since last month’s Open Championship as he struggled to find his swing across the four days.
Speaking after his final round, the Masters champion feels he has a lot of work to do before next week’s second event of the FedExCup, the BMW Championship.
He said: “Obviously didn’t come in here with a ton of reps, [it] almost felt like the more the week went on the more I felt lost with my golf swing a little bit.
“The swing wasn’t in sync, and obviously I didn’t do a ton of practice coming in here.
“I’m so far away from where I need to be to even feel like I have a chance.
“I’ve just got to keep working and hope it turns around a little bit.”

McIlroy continued: “I guess it’s nice to shake the rust off a little bit, but I’m going to have to work pretty hard between now and next Thursday to feel like I have any sort of golf game to compete next week.
“To me, it’s more about obviously the execution of what I’m doing right now, and the execution wasn’t there this week.
“I’m going to have to sort of put the head down and grind from now until Thursday to try to feel like I have any sort of chance next week.”
Regardless of his result next week, McIlroy will make the 30-man field for the season-ending Tour Championship, with his eyes set on winning an unprecedented fourth FedExCup.

Scottie Scheffler was the standout performer at the St Jude Championship, winning with a record eight-shot victory.
The American started the final round with a two-shot advantage over challenger Sam Burns, as he wrapped up his tournament with a stunning 17-under-par.
It was his first win since January, after a drought throughout the season, despite still placing well.
Commenting on his victory, Scheffler said: “I’ve had some close calls this year.

“It is always challenging playing with one of my best friends, but going into today, I wanted to do my best.
“I think I’ve been really consistent. That’s what I’m most proud of.
“It’s nice for it to pay off this week; this is a lot better feeling than having a statistically good week.”
