Chelsea’s self-imposed 5pm cutoff on Friday evening came and went without Manchester City tabling a £120m offer for Enzo Fernandez.
The Stamford Bridge club responded swiftly by withdrawing the previously agreed terms and conditions governing any potential sale of the Argentine midfielder.
Those conditions had effectively functioned as a release clause, with Fernandez’s camp having been informed of the arrangement back in May.
Chelsea’s position on Friday night was unambiguous: any deal under the prior framework is no longer available.

The move represents a significant escalation in what has become an extended standoff over the 25-year-old’s future.
By pulling the existing sale terms from the table, Chelsea have reasserted their authority over the situation, placing themselves in a stronger negotiating position should any fresh approach materialise.
Despite the deadline lapsing, the Fernandez saga appears far from concluded. Chelsea’s expectation is that the midfielder will remain at the club for the entirety of the 2026-27 campaign.
However, Manchester City have not been entirely shut out. The Premier League champions could yet mount a renewed attempt to secure Fernandez’s signature, albeit under fresh conditions and potentially at a higher price.
City maintained daily dialogue with the player’s representatives right up to the deadline, including throughout the preceding 48 hours. The club are also working on the sale of Tijjani Reijnders to Al Qadsiah, while Barcelona continue pursuing Rodri — developments that could free up sufficient funds for a revised bid in the coming days.
Some sources maintain that Chelsea would still have to seriously consider any £120m offer, regardless of the expired deadline.

The tug-of-war over Fernandez has been building for more than 60 days. His representatives were verbally given the sale parameters at the end of May, once it became apparent the player was open to leaving Stamford Bridge.
Real Madrid initially appeared the likeliest destination, but the Spanish giants issued a statement in early July ruling out any pursuit of the midfielder.
That left City as the primary suitor. Their head coach Enzo Maresca, who departed Chelsea last season, has made no secret of his eagerness to bring Fernandez to the Etihad.
Asked about the Friday deadline, Maresca declined to engage seriously, responding with a smirk.
Chelsea’s cutoff was designed to send a clear signal to the player’s camp that the club ultimately controls his future.
Fernandez remains under contract at Stamford Bridge until 2032 and served as vice-captain during the tenures of both Maresca and Liam Rosenior.
He is yet to feature under new manager Xabi Alonso, having only recently returned from his post-World Cup break.
His agent, Javier Pastore, has spent weeks working behind the scenes to engineer a switch to the Etihad, even as the player himself has not actively sought to force a departure.

Reporting on the situation has been notably mixed.
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano indicated that City’s next move remains uncertain, while Kieran Gill cited Chelsea sources insisting Fernandez will stay.
