A man was fatally stabbed inside South Station on Wednesday evening, officials said.
Around 5:33 p.m., Boston police responded to a report of a person stabbed at the station, police said.
The victim, whom officials have not publicly identified, sustained at least one stab wound and was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said in a press conference.
The preliminary investigation indicates that the victim was involved in an altercation with another male on an escalator leaving the station, police said.
The suspect was still at large as of around 8 p.m Wednesday, police said, and officials described the investigation as still very active.
“There’s still a lot of investigative work to be done here,” Suffolk County District Attorney Kevin Hayden said during the press conference. “There’s obviously, given the time of day, a number of witnesses.”
Boston police, Transit police and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office were at the scene Wednesday night, police said. Investigators are looking at video evidence along with interviewing witnesses, Hayden said.
