CJP spokesperson Saurav Das on Wednesday alleged that police in Puducherry intimidated his family during a visit to their home, a charge the force denied. A senior police official said officers had gone to the house of Das’s relatives as part of a ‘routine exercise’ ahead of Independence Day.
Das said in posts on X that his family was subjected to questioning and accused the BJP government in Puducherry of trying to intimidate them. Police rejected the allegation of harassment and said residents living near important routes are routinely visited and asked a few questions for security reasons.
While confirming that police had visited the home of Das’s relatives, the senior official said such visits are carried out ahead of important days like Independence Day. Das said, “Two hours ago, the Pondicherry police showed up at my family’s home and subjected them to all kinds of questioning”.
He also wrote, “Why this harassment, Puducherry Police? Who ordered this and for what purpose? Is this the legal procedure? Why is the BJP government in Pondicherry intimidating my family? This is not the character of the Pondy government. This is being done at the behest of the Union government,” Das alleged.
He further said, “If the intention is to intimidate me into silence, it will not work. This will not cower me down. It only strengthens our resolve to build a better system, one where the police uphold the law instead of acting like goondas”.
In another post, Das said Union Minister Amit Shah was in Puducherry two days ago, where he met the Home Minister of the Union Territory and the Lieutenant Governor. “Was this intimidation tactic planned at their meeting?” he asked.
The exchange followed Das’s allegation that his family was intimidated during a police visit to their Puducherry home, while police maintained that the visit to his relatives’ house was a standard security measure ahead of Independence Day and not an act of harassment.
