It was protest versus protest in the Parliament complex on Tuesday (August 11, 2026) as MPs of both the ruling NDA and the Opposition came face to face shouting slogans at each other at the main entry gate, Makar Dwar.

With security personnel forming a cordon between them, NDA MPs alleged that the Leader of Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, was “running away” from a debate on student protests across the country, while INDIA bloc MPs demanded a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the alleged police excesses during the July 20 student protests in Delhi.

Government offer

On Monday (August 10, 2026), the government offered a full-fledged discussion in the Lok Sabha on the protests by students and the police action against them, with Union Home Minister Amit Shah set to reply to the debate. However, the Opposition refused to relent, insisting that Mr. Shah clarify who ordered the use of pellet guns on the students in Delhi. Separately in Jharkhand, the agitation by students over alleged irregularities in recruitment exams escalated with the police using water cannons and lathi-charging the protesters. The Congress is a part of the Hemant Soren-led Jharkhand government.

The Opposition MPs, including Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav, on the other hand, protested over the alleged donation theft at the Ram temple in Ayodhya and the recent police crackdown on student protesters at Jantar Mantar.

BJP MPs’ query

Ms. Gandhi Vadra was seen exchanging some words with protesting MPs from the NDA. She tried to confront the BJP MPs, saying Mr. Gandhi had met the students from Jharkhand. In response, BJP’s Surat MP Mukesh Dalal asked her why the Opposition leader had not visited Jharkhand.

BJP MP Sambit Patra said, “Rahul Gandhi, isn’t your party a part of the Jharkhand government? Is it not a fact that barbaric scenes were witnessed in Jharkhand on Monday? The way lathis was used on children, the way students and girl students were mistreated and the way the police showed brutality against them, who is accountable for this?”
