The Cleveland Browns are still going through their quarterback battle in training camp, as Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders are at the forefront. This won’t be an easy decision for Todd Monken, and that just means both players are competing at a high level.
Monken was recently asked about Sanders and how he’s looked in training camp, and there has obviously been an improvement in how he sees the game in his second year in the league.
“He’s improved his operation by his pre-snap, post-snap,” Monken said. “His eyes and feet are working in conjunction. Being able to check the ball down and get it out of his hands. He’s such a playmaker that it’s hard for him. For a guy that’s always looking to make a play and is super competitive, that’s a win.
“You try to get super competitive quarterbacks to understand that throwing the ball away and eliminating loss plays are a win. That’s something over time that he’ll continue to build on.”

Sanders showed toward the end of last season what he’s capable of, and that’s why he’s in the running to be the starting quarterback this season. On the other side, Watson is fully healthy and the proven veteran in this situation, so Monken might see value in that.
In the end, the quarterback who plays the best over the next month is going to get the starting job, and it’ll be interesting to see who comes out on top. If Sanders can continue to make strides throughout camp and have some good reps in training camp, he’ll make a good case for being the starter in Week 1.
He’ll have to fight off Watson, but he should worry about what he’s doing to give him a chance to lead the team.
