Social media giant Meta has acknowledged shortcomings in its algorithmic mechanisms during a technical meeting with officials of the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), sources told India Today, as the Centre stepped up its engagement with the social media giant over regulatory and compliance concerns.
According to sources, the discussions were centred on Meta’s algorithms and the technical systems that govern the platform’s functioning. During the meeting, the company is learnt to have admitted that there were gaps in its algorithmic mechanisms.
The meeting follows earlier interactions in which the Union minister had asked Meta to identify all areas of concern and submit a comprehensive corrective action plan to address them.
Sources said Meta’s global technical team is likely to remain in India for further discussions with government officials. More rounds of meetings, led by the IT Secretary, are expected in the coming days as both sides work towards resolving the outstanding issues.
According to sources, the government and Meta have agreed to remain engaged until the identified concerns are addressed.
MeitY also reiterated its position that all digital platforms operating in the country must comply fully with Indian laws and urged Meta to take swift corrective action to address the issues flagged during the discussions.
The latest meeting between the tech giant and the government officials came two days after Meta’s global affairs head Joel Kaplan reiterated the organisation’s apology for removing one of the live videos posted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Facebook. The meeting lasted for 45 minutes, and the officials flagged the removal and also pointed out the company’s lapses in curbing child sexual abuse material.
