The Red Sox continue to play their best baseball of the season.
Behind six dominant innings from Sonny Gray and another home run from Wilyer Abreu, Boston blanked the White Sox, 4-0, Wednesday night at Fenway Park to extend its winning streak to seven games.
The victory improved Boston to 62-51 and to 5-0 against Chicago this season. The Red Sox also improved to 41-14 when scoring first, a formula that has fueled much of their recent success.
Boston wasted little time grabbing the lead.
Willson Contreras lined an RBI single in the first inning to score Nick Sogard, giving Gray all the run support he would need.
Gray looked much more like the ace the Red Sox have leaned on for most of the season in the absence of Garrett Crochet.
After allowing 17 hits and nine earned runs over his previous two starts, the veteran right-hander bounced back with six scoreless innings, scattering three hits while striking out eight to earn his 14th victory of the year.
“I just felt like I was a little closer to just being myself,” Gray said. “That’s a good feeling.
Gray has gone 12-1 with a 2.42 ERA and 93 strikeouts in his last 16 starts dating back to May 6 and has allowed three runs or less in 18 of 21 starts.
“I thought he was awesome,” Chad Tracy said. “Very locked in from the time he got in here and he executed his pitches, had his spin pretty much whenever he wanted to for swing and miss and just a really, really good outing.”
The bullpen finished what Gray started as four Boston pitchers combined on the club’s latest shutout.
Abreu continued one of the hottest stretches of his career.
The right fielder launched a solo homer in the third inning, his 20th of the season, giving him four home runs over his last three games. It also made him the second Red Sox player to reach the 20-homer mark this season, joining Contreras.
Abreu leads the majors with nine blasts since the All-Star break and in the win on Wednesday night recorded his third consecutive multi-hit game which ties a career-high.
“When you hit one the others just come by themselves,” Abreu said of his homers. “When you’re not trying to do too much and you get a good pitch to hit and you make good contact, good things are going to happen.”
Jarren Duran also continued showing signs of breaking out.
The left fielder ripped a double just inside the first-base bag, extending his hitting streak to five games. During that stretch, Duran has collected three extra-base hits, including two home runs.

Duran is hitting .341 with an .856 OPS and has six multi-hit games over his last 12 played, since July 24.
Boston added insurance runs late.
Andruw Monasterio lifted a sacrifice fly in the seventh before Caleb Durbin capped the scoring with an RBI single in the eighth.
Durbin also flashed the glove that has quickly become one of his calling cards. He charged a perfectly placed bunt in the seventh inning and made a strong throw to first to retire Tristan Peters.
Contreras showcased his defensive value as well.
After fielding an errant throw from Durbin in the third inning, the veteran first baseman quickly fired home to cut down Sam Antonacci trying to score, preserving Boston’s shutout.
The Red Sox are now in the midst of the 2nd-longest consecutive series win streak in franchise history at 9.
The all-time club record? The 1912 Red Sox who won 11 series in a row.

Contreras did leave the game in the top of the fifth inning due to illness.
“He’s a little under the weather,” Tracy told reporters after the game. “Feeling a little sick and then we took some temperatures as the game was going. Temperature started to go up. He started to get a little dizzy so we thought it was best to get him out of there.”
Boston won its ninth consecutive series and improved to 12-3 in their lash 15 series. Most importantly, the Sox are finally winning at home in front of the Fenway Faithful.
“It’s amazing, just amazing to play here, it’s a unique ballpark so that’s something that always gives you energy to play here,” Abreu said. “We’re privileged to play here, this is an amazing field and amazing fans, so that’s the key for this team.”
The Red Sox will look to complete a three-game sweep Thursday night when left-hander Ranger Suarez (4-3, 3.15 ERA) takes the ball against newly acquired White Sox right-hander Luis Castillo (3-9, 5.06 ERA), who will make his Chicago debut.
