Screen Producers Australia has appointed experienced executive Chris Keely as its new Chief Operating Officer.
The appointment, announced on Wednesday, sees Keely replace Sarah Melrose, who is departing the organisation after around 18 months in the role.
He joins the national industry body representing Australia’s independent screen production businesses following senior leadership positions across media, telecommunications, government and the not-for-profit sector.

As Chief Operating Officer, Keely will oversee SPA’s operations, finance, people and organisational performance, with responsibility for strengthening member services and supporting the organisation’s strategic priorities.
SPA Chief Executive Officer Matthew Deaner said Keely’s executive leadership, media expertise and public policy experience would be a valuable asset to the organisation as it continued supporting Australia’s independent screen production sector.
“As Chief Operating Officer, Chris will help ensure SPA continues to evolve as a strong, member-focused organisation, delivering excellent services while supporting the long-term success of Australia’s independent screen production sector.”
Most recently, Keely served as Deputy Director at Pride in Diversity after previously leading Create NSW as Executive Director, where he guided the organisation through the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. His career has included executive leadership roles across Australia, New Zealand and Singapore.
Commenting on his appointment, Keely said he looked forward to strengthening SPA’s organisational capability, enhancing services for members and continuing to evolve initiatives including the annual SCREEN FOREVER conference.
