What a difference a few weeks can make for Sonny Gray and the Red Sox.
With Boston mired near the bottom of the American League standings just a month ago, Gray was candid when asked about his future in Boston — especially with the 36-year-old pending free agent holding plenty of appeal as a rotation-boosting rental for a contender.
“If someone came to me from the Red Sox and made a decision that that’s the direction that this team was going to go, I would be open for a conversation,” Gray told Tim Healey of The Boston Globe in June. “Whatever happens from then, only time will tell. But I would be open for a conversation.”
But, with Boston now in the playoff picture amid an unexpected 18-4 record in July, could the Red Sox not only hold onto Gray ahead of MLB’s trade deadline on August 3 — but also keep the veteran starter beyond this current season?
According to both Sean McAdam and Chris Cotillo of MassLive, Gray has expressed a willingness to stick with Boston beyond this season, even if he might command a heftier contract out on the open market this winter.
“A year ago, toward the end of a stellar first season in Boston, [Craig] Breslow rewarded [Aroldis] Chapman with a one-year extension that kept him off the free agent market last winter,” McAdam and Cotillo wrote. “A similar strategy with Gray might make sense.
“The veteran, after silencing doubters about his ability to pitch in a big market with a fantastic first four months in a Red Sox uniform, is said to “definitely” be interested in a contract extension with Boston, though conversations haven’t picked up as the Red Sox have focused on turning around their season.”
Gray has been a key pickup for the Red Sox this season, with the journeyman going 12-2 so far in 2026 with a 2.78 ERA and 93 strikeouts in 106.2 innings of work.
Gray has bounced around across baseball as of late, with Boston standing as the fifth team he’s played for over the last nine years.
Re-upping in Boston would offer Gray some stability over the final stages of his career, while also giving him a solid payout amid a season where he’s served as Boston’s most dependable starter.
Boston has been bolstered by the emergence of younger arms in their rotation this season, led by Payton Tolle and Jake Bennett. Despite Garrett Crochet’s injury woes this season, Boston’s ace is expected to have a clean slate in 2027 as well.
But, even with arms like Crochet, Tolle, Ranger Suarez, and Bennett all expected to be in the rotation moving forward, re-upping Sonny Gray on a short-term deal feels like a prudent move for Boston, given both his impressive production this season and the vacancy left by Connelly Early’s trade to Washington last weekend.
