Philadelphia might have been the site of American Independence 250 years ago — but fifty years before that — our waters were used by people every day for recreation and leisure just like the Lenni Lenape had for thousands prior. One of those ambitious young men was none other than our very own Benjamin Franklin.
Like Franklin — Philadelphia’s Maurice Scott also began on those same Philadelphia Waters. It’s where he found a love of rowing. In 2010 — as part of Philadelphia City Rowing — an organization that provides a love of water to Inner City Youth — Maurice Scott found a passion on the river.
Scott would spend time with the US Naval Academy Rowing Team and enrolled at Arcadia where he participated in rowing, volleyball, and cross country. From there he even spent time in Australia at the University of New South Wales.
Scott’s accomplishments are numerous. In addition to being a Philadelphia City Champion for rowing, Scott has more than ten total championships. He’s even honored at Honored in the “Philadelphia Rowing: Breaking Barriers” display which us located at the Independence Seaport Museum.
From miles around — especially on cold winter nights in the Philadelphia suburbs — you can see the lights of Arcadia University reflecting over Route 309. During Eagles season — Grey’s Tower Castle is even occasionally lit up midnight green. Like many Gilded Age mansions around Philadelphia — Grey’s Castle was first constructed in 1898 above what is not Route 309 — it was the design of famous Philadelphia architect Horace Trumbauer.
Built at the direction of Harrison — the Castle was inspired by Alnwick Castle in England and purchased by Beaver College in 1962.
Maurice Scott has some new accomplishments on the horizon. He’s currently training for the beach sprint rowing in the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. He’s also the President, CEO and Founder of Rowfluencers, LLC and a US Rowing Commentator.
Behind all of those successes is a love for rowing. One found on the Philadelphia waters.
