Adelaide is heading into a classic mid-winter week, with a few light showers, a brisk change early in the week, and a brighter finish by next weekend. After a cool and patchy start on Sunday, the city’s weather will stay fairly subdued, with temperatures mostly sitting in the mid-teens and the wettest part of the outlook arriving on Tuesday.
For the rest of today, Adelaide can expect partly cloudy conditions with patchy morning fog and the chance of a shower or two, although any rain is expected to ease later this afternoon and into the evening. The top is heading for 16 degrees, with light winds keeping things fairly calm across the metro area. It’s a gentle winter day overall, but still one to keep the jacket close by.
Monday looks mostly settled through the morning before the next change approaches southern South Australia. Adelaide is forecast to stay partly cloudy, with just a slight chance of a shower and a maximum of 17 degrees after a chilly overnight low of 8. Winds will pick up through the day, shifting from north to northeasterly at 15 to 20 km/h before tending north to northwesterly at 25 to 35 km/h during the morning. That will make it feel a little sharper outdoors, especially in exposed spots and along the coast.
Tuesday is shaping up as the wettest day of the seven-day stretch. Cloud will thicken across Adelaide, with a very high chance of showers, most likely during the morning, before conditions begin to ease later in the day. The city is forecast to reach 15 degrees after a minimum of 10, with 2 to 7mm of rainfall possible. Northwesterly winds at 20 to 30 km/h will swing southwesterly during the morning, signalling the arrival of the cooler change.
By Wednesday, Adelaide will remain cloudy, with a medium chance of showers and a cooler top of 14 degrees. Winds from the south to southwesterly at 15 to 25 km/h will become light during the morning, taking some of the edge off by later in the day. Thursday stays grey, with another slight chance of a shower and a low of 6 before a top of 14.
The second half of the week brings a more settled pattern. Friday is forecast to be partly cloudy with light winds and a top of 15 degrees, while Saturday looks like the pick of the week, with sunny skies, light winds becoming north to northwesterly during the day, and a top of 16 degrees. After a run of cloud, showers and cool southerlies, that should make for a far more inviting start to the weekend across Adelaide.
Across regional South Australia, the broader picture is being driven by a strong high pressure system that is slowly weakening as it drifts east, ahead of a cold front crossing southern parts of the state on Monday. Frost patches are affecting parts of the northern agricultural area, the Flinders and sections of the Pastoral districts, while fog has also been an issue around Eyre Peninsula and on and east of the ranges. Showers are mostly staying to the southern agricultural districts and coastal areas at first, before becoming more widespread on Tuesday, extending into the northern agricultural area and possibly the south of the Pastoral districts. Rainfall totals are generally expected to stay light, with less than 2mm about the northern agricultural area and south of the Pastoral districts, increasing to 2 to 10mm about the southern agricultural area, with falls of 10 to 20mm possible about the Mount Lofty Ranges.
For coastal communities and anyone heading out on the water, conditions will also become more active early in the week. Adelaide Metropolitan Waters are expected to see north to northwesterly winds strengthen on Monday, with seas building to 1 to 1.5 metres around midday, before a showery, southwesterly change arrives on Tuesday.
