Jan Shakti Janata Dal (JSJD) chief Tej Pratap Yadav was arrested by Patna Police on Saturday evening, hours after being briefly detained and released during protests held as part of the Bihar bandh over the alleged NEET paper leak.
Tej Pratap was at a shopping mall in Patna when a police team, led by the City Superintendent of Police (SP), arrived and took him into custody. He was escorted in the City SP’s official vehicle amid the presence of a large contingent of police personnel.
While Patna Police is yet to issue an official statement detailing the charges, sources said the arrest is linked to incidents of vandalism and arson reported during the Bihar bandh earlier in the day.
TEJ PRATAP DETAINED FOR DEMONSTRATIONS
Earlier on Saturday, Tej Pratap had joined protesters at Ram Gulam Chowk near Gandhi Maidan, where demonstrations were held in support of demands for a fair investigation into the alleged NEET paper leak. He was detained during the protest but was later released.
However, according to sources, police subsequently reviewed CCTV footage from the protest site and allegedly found evidence suggesting that Tej Pratap had incited protesters during the demonstration.
Based on the fresh findings, police launched another operation and arrested him from the shopping mall on Saturday evening.
When police arrived at the mall, Tej Pratap’s associates questioned why he was being taken away despite having already been released earlier in the day.
Police informed them that he would be transported in the City SP’s vehicle rather than a police van.
Tej Pratap also asked officers who would bring his personal vehicle, to which they replied that it would be driven separately by police personnel.
BIHAR ‘BANDH’ FOR NEET PROTESTS
The Bihar bandh witnessed protests across several districts, with demonstrators demanding a transparent probe into the alleged NEET paper leak and strict action against those responsible for examination irregularities.
The agitation also led to incidents of road blockades, disruption of rail services and clashes with police in parts of the state.
Police are expected to formally disclose the charges against Tej Pratap after completing the legal process. Sources indicated that his alleged role in violence on Exhibition Road, including vandalism and arson, is central to the case.
