Social norms might dictate that a wedding guest should never outshine the bride. But Lady Helen Taylor, the daughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent, has proven time and time again that true style star power can never be dimmed.
A former Armani muse, Lady Helen has forged a reputation as an unsung regal fashion icon, whose understated, bohemian-inspired approach to dressing always sets her apart from the polished coat dresses and sharply tailored suits that define many modern royal wardrobes.
Arguably her most triumphant sartorial moment came on her own wedding day on July 18th, 1992. Lady Helen Windsor (as she was then known) looked resplendent in a bespoke Catherine Walker gown for her wedding to her art dealer husband, Timothy Taylor. Royals including Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, then-Prince Charles and Princess Diana gathered at St. George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, for the service, followed by a reception at her parents’ country retreat in Oxfordshire. Lady Helen and Timothy now share four children, Columbus, Cassius, Elosie, and Estella.
Although convention dictated it had to be a British designer for the royal wedding, it was her long-time collaborator, Giorgio Armani, who personally selected her “going away” outfit. The legendary Italian designer also dressed the mother of the bride, the Duchess of Kent.
