Athiya Shetty’s Manish Malhotra sari reimagines Radha-Krishna iconography in the woven form

Athiya Shetty made a compelling case for wearing craft-forward heritage textiles in a Manish Malhotra sari at Anshula Kapoor and Rohan Thakkar’s star-studded wedding reception in Mumbai. From its nuanced play of colour to its juxtaposition of fabrics and embroidery, the ensemble showcased the richness of heritage techniques and Indian maximalism at its best. The drape seamlessly blended multiple textiles, textures and artisanal finishes.

Designed as a half and half drape, it combined two textile traditions, with each retaining its identity. The pallu came alive in a richly executed bandhani, washed in a colour spectrum that moved between peach, blush pink and lilac. Traditional tie-dye motifs were punctuated with checkered and diamond shaped zari detailing that echoed the visual language of a classic Ghatchola weave. The pallu was further enriched with figurative woven motifs that are evocative of Radha-Krishna iconography on a swing alongside peacocks, deers and birds. The sari’s rich aari-embroidered border added yet another layer of richness to the look. In contrast, the pleated half was woven in lilac brocade with metallic floral buttis, The metallic blouse continued the conversation between colour and craft. Its cap sleeved silhouette was lavishly embellished with a combination of aari embroidery, sequin work, gold gota and tassel detailing.

For accessorising, Shetty kept things pared-down. She went with a statement kundan choker with gemstones and a pair of classic polki stud earrings. Her beauty look remained soft with smoky eyes, coral toned lips and sleek, centre parted hair worn loose. A tiny gold bindi completed the ensemble. A silver potli bag offered a modern two-toned finishing touch.

The beauty of Shetty’s look lies in its longevity. From its fabric to surface ornamentation, it is a sari rooted in heritage yet refreshed with pastel hues. It is an investment-worthy drape that promises to outlast trends and return to your wardrobe season after season.
