Jannik Sinner beats Novak Djokovic and reaches men’s Wimbledon final

Jannik Sinner has beaten Novak Djokovic and reached the final of Wimbledon.

The defending champion beat the veteran 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a convincing display to set up a final against Alexander Zverev.

Sinner outclassed Djokovic on centre court, with the Serbian playing well but just unable to deal with the relentless pressure from the Italian.

The Italian will face Zverev on Sunday, after the German beat British wildcard Arthur Fery.

The intense encounter under the sun saw the pair unable to break each other early on, heading to deuce multiple times, which became a story of the match.

Finally, in the ninth game of the contest, Sinner crucially broke Djokovic as he served for the opening set.

The Italian had two chances at break point after making it 40-15, but was pegged back momentarily by Djokovic.

The world No1 eventually got the job done in set one, winning 6-4.

Both players continued to exchange fabulous shots, with Sinner applying the pressure on Djokovic in game five of the second set.

The Italian once again found himself serving for the set, racing to a 40-love lead.

With a brilliant serve to Djokovic’s backhand, Sinner took a two-set lead after Djokovic could not find a return.

Part of Djokovic’s struggle came from returning the ball, failing to lift it over the net on numerous occasions, with Sinner not being forced into errors.

He continued his momentum in the third set, breaking his opponent immediately, who while not playing poorly, could not cope with the world No1.

Djokovic won the third game of set three after being forced to deuce, with it starting to feel that this was going to be Sinner’s match.

Once again, in what felt like a real feeling of deja vu, Sinner was serving for the set.

With three match points, the Italian got the job done, winning the contest in just under two-and-a-half hours.

Speaking after his triumphant victory, Sinner said: “The atmosphere has always been amazing since the first day, and it means a lot to me to play one more final here.

“It’s the most special tournament we have. It means a lot to me. Of course, playing against Novak, what he is showing is a huge inspiration – not only for you guys but for the new generation, what he is still doing is amazing. Incredible.”

Speaking about his game plan to beat Djokovic: “We always have very, very tough matches. The last one, he won in the semis in Australia. I tried to make a couple of adjustments, but it’s difficult here on grass.

“He had a very tough match against Felix [Auger-Aliassime], which we will remember forever here in this arena. I tried to stay aggressive, serving well helped me today. He is the best returner we have in our game so I tried to mix it up. I’m very happy with this performance.”
