England’s crunch World Cup clash with Mexico has been delayed by an hour, meaning the fixture will now start at 2am.
With thunderstorms and lightning causing disruption prior to the clash at the Azteca Stadium, FIFA have decided to postpone the beginning of the contest – much to the dismay of millions of fans watching at home.
Earlier in the week, there was speculation that the fixture would be brought forward by six hours due to the threat of severe weather.
FIFA ultimately opted to stick to the original plan, but things have now changed once again.
A statement released by the governing body read: “Due to adverse weather conditions in Mexico City, including risk caused by lightning in the vicinity of the stadium, the kick-off of the World Cup 2026 round of 16 match between Mexico and England has been delayed to 19.00 local time (21:00 EDT).
“The safety and security of all individuals is Fifa’s priority.
“We thank all fans for their understanding and cooperation.”

Many have been left unimpressed, however, especially given how FIFA had the chance to move the kick-off window just days ago.
“What a shambles this has been from FIFA. 2am KO (UK),” said one social media user.
A second echoed those words, writing: “Shambles of a day for FIFA, not fit for purpose.”

Another sarcastically wrote: “If only FIFA had some sort of pre warning that this could have been an issue.”
A fourth stated: “FIFA should’ve made them kick off earlier lads.”
And a fifth raged: “Dreadful from FIFA not to bring kick-off forward, as planned, based on this forecast.
“Every chance it’ll keep getting delayed.
“Won’t be setting a 2nd alarm anyway, GL England.”
FIFA rules stipulate that any lightning within a six-mile radius of a ground will lead to postponement, in order to protect fans and players.

Fans and players are required to take shelter away from their seats, while a 30-minute countdown begins before proceedings can begin again.
The countdown clock resets to 30 minutes each time lightning strikes inside the distance.
Meanwhile, England have made three changes for tonight’s crunch clash.
Jarrell Quansah comes in for Djed Spence at right-back, with Declan Rice – who finished the game in that area against DR Congo – reverted to midfield.
Anthony Gordon replaces Marcus Rashford on the left, while Bukayo Saka is restored in place of Arsenal team-mate Noni Madueke.
