Murray Street in Tanunda is set for a significant makeover, with the town moving closer to the first stages of the Tanunda Central Market development – a project poised to become a focal point in one of the Barossa Valley’s most historic communities.
The $2.5 million project, designed by Tanunda-based JBG Architects, will replace two existing residential and commercial structures at 72 and 74 Murray Street with an integrated two-storey commercial development spanning a 2019 square metre site at the corner of Murray and Julius Streets.
“The developers had been looking for a suitable site in the Barossa when two adjacent blocks on Tanunda’s main street became available for sale, offering the ideal location for their vision of a commercial destination”, explains a JBG representative.
The development comprises two double-storey buildings separated by a 7.5-metre pedestrian mall (an open-air laneway running from the Murray Street frontage through to a new 20-space car park at the rear). At ground level, visitors will find a dedicated fruit and vegetable retailer, a café, and four boutique retail shops. Upstairs, a restaurant and bar with an alfresco balcony overlooking Murray Street will offer seating for up to 58 diners, with the venue licensed to trade through to midnight.
“Popular Tanunda café Beans and Cream, which was an existing tenant on the site, has temporarily relocated for the duration of the build and is excited to return to its new premises with expanded offerings,” explains JBM.
Barossa Council Mayor Bim Lange OAM says the project will be a welcome addition to the town, as it represents exactly what the region stands for.
“In terms of economic development, the Tanunda Central Market fits nicely into what the Barossa is all about,” Mayor Lange said.
“Who doesn’t enjoy visiting a good café, restaurant and bar – or welcome extra retailers into the main streets of popular tourist destinations?”
JBG Architects say the project has been designed with both commerce, community and the existing landscape in mind.
“During the design phase, the developers and JBG Architects worked closely to ensure that the contemporary design using timber and stone remained sensitive to Tanunda’s historic character, with careful consideration given to the neighbouring landmark buildings.
“Open space is central to the project, with the two buildings linked by a shared, tree-lined public thoroughfare that invites foot traffic and creates opportunities for retailers to spill out into the open. The design also respects the historic Ephraim Coombe memorial which anchors the site at the corner of Murray Street and Julius Street.

During the consultation period, some concerns were raised in regards to the two-storey height being out of character for the main street, the architectural style departing from the town’s traditional built form, and proposed late trading hours. However, those in support of the development pointed to the existing site being in need of renewal, and highlighted the flow-on economic benefits new businesses would bring to the main street.
“These sorts of developments create more activity for visitors and locals alike and add vibrancy – things that are so important for regional towns to thrive” Mayor Lange expanded.
“So we are very pleased to see this level of investment in Tanunda and welcome the flow-on effects it will bring.
“It shows confidence in our region, fits within our existing planning rules and brings in extra business and employment opportunities for our community”.
