Central prison authorities refute allegations made by former inmate

Authorities at Bengaluru Central Prison have rejected allegations made by a woman identified as Sandhya Nagaraj regarding conditions and activities within the women’s wing of the prison.

According to an official clarification issued by prison authorities, Sandhya Nagaraj, who had previously been lodged in the prison as an undertrial inmate, recently made statements to certain Kannada media outlets alleging irregularities in the women’s section of the facility.

In response to these claims, prison officials conducted a surprise inspection of all rooms in the women’s wing on June 11, 2026, in the presence of women officers and staff. The inspection reportedly found no prohibited items, and all materials present were said to be in accordance with prison regulations.

The following day, the Deputy Inspector General of Prisons (South Zone), Bengaluru, visited the women’s wing and conducted inquiries with inmates and staff members. Authorities stated that the investigation found no evidence supporting the allegations raised by Ms. Nagaraj.

The prison administration further stated that two inmates and three staff members had lodged complaints alleging that false accusations had been made against them. Based on these complaints, prison authorities requested legal action through the Parappana Agrahara Police Station.

Based on the complaints, cases have been registered in Parappana Agrahara police station under non-cognizable report for further investigation.

The clarification also addressed media reports suggesting that inmate in the Renukaswamy murder case accused, Pavithra Gowda was receiving special treatment within the women’s prison wing. Authorities categorically denied these claims, stating that no special privileges or facilities had been extended to her.

The statement was issued by the Superintendent of Police and the Chief Superintendent of Bengaluru Central Prison, who reiterated that the allegations circulated in sections of the media were unfounded and unsupported by official inquiries.
