A man in Bihar’s Bagaha allegedly killed his wife and then hanged her body from a mango tree to make the murder appear as a suicide, police said.
Police arrested the accused husband, identified as Gautam Kaji, and sent him to judicial custody.
According to Bagaha Superintendent of Police Ramanand Kaushal, police received information about a woman’s body hanging from a tree in an orchard near Garkatti village. A police team reached the spot, took custody of the body, and sent it for post-mortem examination.
During the investigation, police identified the deceased as 25-year-old Hemlata Kumari, a resident of Garkatti village. Considering the seriousness of the case, police officers and a Forensic Science Laboratory team inspected the crime scene and began a scientific investigation.
Evidence collected during the probe raised doubts about the suicide theory. Police subsequently detained Hemlata’s husband, Gautam Kaji, for questioning. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the crime.
According to police, the accused said he had an argument with his wife and assaulted her before taking her to a sugarcane field, where he strangled her to death. He allegedly hid the body for some time and later hung it from a mango tree at night to make the death appear to be a case of suicide.
Based on a complaint filed by the victim’s father, police registered a case of dowry harassment and murder. The accused has been arrested and sent to judicial custody.
SP Ramanand Kaushal said police would seek a speedy trial in the case and make efforts to ensure that the accused is punished at the earliest.
