Mount Barker eatery The Local Plate has officially opened, featuring a refreshed, family-friendly menu and championing local produce.

“We wanted the name to represent South Australia,” owner Deepak Sriramulu told Glam Adelaide.

“It comes from the idea of creating a place that feels like home for locals.”

He said that the restaurant, which is in the Aston Hills Shopping Centre, is about “local hospitality, local flavours, and local connections.”

Sriramulu, who originally owned the restaurant as a Schnithouse franchise, said that he decided to rebrand to better reflect his vision and values.

“We wanted to move away from a franchise model and build a venue that is more community-focused,” he said.

The menu kept Schnithouse’s original crowd favourites, including “hand-crumbed schnitzels and burgers,” but expanded to include “steaks, pizzas, pastas, seafood, and grazing boards.”

“We also wanted the menu to be accessible for families, which is why we introduced affordable lunch specials, [and] family bundles.

“We’re also passionate about supporting local where possible, sourcing fresh fruit and vegetables through Hahndorf suppliers and showcasing local South Australian produce and wines throughout the menu”.

The menu features dishes including the Meat Lover Schnitzel, The Local Angus Burger, a Slow-Braised Lamb Shank, and Sriramulu’s personal favourite, the Local Grazing Board.

He said that the grazing board “captures what the venue is about: sharing food, trying different flavours, and bringing people together”.

The restaurant also has an extensive drinks list including wines, cocktails, local beers on tap, coffee and milkshakes.

“We wanted the drinks list to have a local flavour too, so we have included several Adelaide Hills and South Australian wines,” Sriramulu said.

“Our wine selection features local favourites from Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley, McLaren Vale, Barossa, and Langhorne Creek.”

Sriramulu added that “more than anything, we want The Local Plate to become a place where the local community feels at home.

“We know Mount Barker is growing quickly, and we want to create a venue where people can celebrate milestones, catch up after work, enjoy family dinners, or simply stop in for a coffee”.
