He’s commendable: Ex-Bengal CM Buddhadeb Bhattacharya’s wife on Suvendu Adhikari

Mira Bhattacharjee, wife of former West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee, has praised the newly elected BJP government in the state, saying its swift implementation of election promises has left a positive impression on her.

In an exclusive interview with Aaj Tak Bangla, Mira Bhattacharjee said the new administration had moved quickly to fulfil commitments made to voters during the election campaign.

“The way the new government has worked within just a few days is highly commendable. I am happy to see that they are implementing their promises so quickly,” she said.

Congratulating the government led by Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, she pointed to the rollout of welfare measures such as free bus travel for women as evidence of its intent to act on its promises.

“The new government is making a sincere effort to implement the promises it made before the elections. Anyone who works for the welfare of the state, regardless of political affiliation, deserves our respect,” she said.

Speaking about Adhikari, Mira Bhattacharjee said she had never met him personally but expressed hope that he would deliver on the commitments made to the people of West Bengal.

CPM AND TMC REIGN CANNOT BE COMPARED

At the same time, she strongly defended the legacy of the Left Front government led by her late husband and rejected comparisons between the Left’s 34-year rule and the Trinamool Congress’s 15 years in power.

“There can be no comparison between the 15 years of Trinamool rule and the 34 years of Left Front governance,” she said.

She credited the Left Front government with establishing several landmark institutions and infrastructure projects, including Nandan, Vidyasagar Setu, the Sahitya Akademi and the Shishu Kishore Akademi. According to her, West Bengal had also emerged as the country’s leading agricultural state during the Left Front era.

Mira Bhattacharjee said Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee had sought to build on that agricultural foundation by bringing large-scale industries to the state. However, she argued that those efforts were derailed during the years that followed.

ABOUT THE SINGUR CONTROVERSY

Referring to the Singur controversy, she claimed many residents now regret opposing the proposed Tata Motors automobile project. “The people of Singur now realise the mistake they made and understand how they were misled at that time. Had an automobile factory been established, Bengal’s economic landscape would have been transformed,” she said.

She added that her husband’s vision extended beyond a single industrial project and was aimed at creating employment opportunities across the state. An automobile plant, she said, would have attracted several ancillary industries and reduced the need for young people to migrate outside Bengal for work.

Welcoming reports that the new government plans to revive industrial activity in Singur, Mira Bhattacharjee said such efforts would benefit local residents. However, she stressed that equal attention must be paid to education and healthcare, sectors she claimed had deteriorated over the past 15 years.

ON THE FUTURE OF LEFT FRONT IN BENGAL

Commenting on the future of the Left Front, she said a younger generation of leaders, including Minakshi Mukherjee and Dipsita Dhar, was working hard to rebuild the party. She also praised CPI(M) leader Mustafizur Rahman, describing him as an educated and committed leader who had earned public support through years of grassroots work.

Concluding the interview, Mira Bhattacharjee said her late husband’s dream was to see West Bengal progress on all fronts. “If the new government can restore Bengal’s former prestige and glory, it will certainly be welcomed and appreciated,” she said.
