Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) National President Nitin Nabin on Friday (June 5, 2026) formally accepted former Tamil Nadu party president K. Annamalai’s resignation from the primary membership of the party.

“The National President of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Nitin Nabin, has accepted the resignation submitted by the Tamil Nadu Ex. State President, K. Annamalai from the primary membership of the Party,” the BJP said in a press release.

The developments comes three days after Mr. Annamalai held meetings with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Mr. Nabin, and national general secretary of the party B.L. Santhosh and submitted his resignation letter to the party leadership on June 2. He is likely to announce a new political movement soon.

Mr. Annamalai, meanwhile, announced on Thursday (June 3) that he would share his thoughts (on his future political course) through social media at 12 noon on Friday (June 5).

The former Karnataka-cadre IPS officer joined the BJP in August 2020 and headed the BJP’s Tamil Nadu unit from July 16, 2021, to April 11, 2025. Nainar Nagenthran replaced him later. Mr. Annamalai unsuccessfully contested the 2021 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections from Aravakurichi and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Coimbatore. He didn’t contest in the recent Assembly elections.
