The man was arrested in New Hampshire early Thursday morning and will be extradited to Maine, police said.

A New Hampshire man was charged with murder Thursday in connection with the 1993 homicide of a Maine woman.

Daniel Jolly, 59, of Portsmouth, N.H., was arrested at about 6 a.m. Thursday, Maine State Police said on Facebook. He will remain in New Hampshire until he can be extradited to Maine.

Jolly allegedly murdered Maxine Bitomski, 73, of Kittery, Maine, more than three decades ago, police said. Bitmoski was found dead in her home on the afternoon of Jan. 16, 1993.

Since then, Maine State Police and the Kittery Police Department have been investigating the case. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy the day after Bitomski’s death, but her cause of death has not been released due to the court documents being sealed, according to police.

Jolly knew Bitomski through his job at Medical Market, a Portsmouth-based medical supply company that provided oxygen equipment and services for her prior to her death, police said. Maine state detectives began reexamining the case in 2021, and their renewed efforts eventually led to Jolly’s arrest.

“This arrest reflects the determination and commitment of investigators who never stopped working this case,” Maine State Police Lt. Tom Pickering said. “The work completed by current and retired Maine State Police Detectives, members of the Maine State Police Crime Laboratory and the Kittery Police Department over the past 33 years was instrumental in bringing this case to this point.”

State police in Maine and New Hampshire, as well as local departments in Kittery and Portsmouth, are continuing to investigate the case. Anyone with information about Bitomski’s death has been asked to contact Maine State Police Sgt. Justin Huntley at 207-624-7076 (option 9).
