Harry Maguire lands unexpected new role for World Cup after missing out on England squad

Harry Maguire has secured an unexpected new role this summer after missing out on Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the World Cup.

The Manchester United defender was one of the most notable omissions when Tuchel named his travelling party, despite enjoying an impressive campaign that many believed had put him firmly back in international contention.

Maguire had rebuilt his reputation following a difficult period in his career and established himself as a key figure under Michael Carrick at Old Trafford.

Yet his resurgence was not enough to convince Tuchel, who instead opted to include defenders such as Dan Burn and Jarell Quansah in his final squad.

Now, however, the 33-year-old appears set for a different World Cup experience.

According to The Athletic, Maguire is expected to feature in Netflix’s new adaptation of the hugely popular “The Rest Is Football” podcast.

The streaming giant is transforming the successful show into a television series for the tournament, with a host of football personalities expected to be involved throughout the competition.

The programme will reportedly follow Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards as they cover events across the United States, Canada and Mexico.

A number of guest appearances are expected during the series, and Maguire is said to be among the names lined up to feature.

Reporter Alex Aljoe and former footballer Rob Jones are also expected to be involved, with coverage planned from inside England’s camp.

The opportunity could provide a welcome distraction for Maguire after the disappointment of missing out on football’s biggest stage.

The defender made no secret of his feelings after learning he would not be part of Tuchel’s plans.

In a heartfelt message posted on social media, Maguire admitted he had been left stunned by the decision.

“I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I’ve had,” he wrote.

“I’ve been left shocked and gutted by the decision.”

The former England regular also reaffirmed his love for representing his country.

“I’ve loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years,” he added.

“I wish the players all the best this summer.”

The reaction from Maguire’s family was equally emotional.

His wife Fern publicly backed the defender, insisting he had done everything possible to earn a place in the squad.

“Beyond devastated for you,” she wrote.

“There was nothing else you could have possibly done to prove your worth.”

Maguire’s mother Zoe was even more outspoken, expressing her frustration at the decision in a strongly worded social media post.

Following the disappointment, Maguire has been making the most of some unexpected free time.

The United defender recently headed on holiday with Fern, sharing photographs from a sunshine break as England’s squad continued preparations for the tournament.
