Aryna Sabalenka has opened up on the major mindset shift that has helped transform her into the dominant force in women’s tennis after beating Naomi Osaka at the French Open.
The world No 1 came through a stern examination against the four-time Grand Slam champion to keep her Roland Garros hopes alive, but it was her reflections afterwards that offered the clearest insight into why she continues to thrive on the biggest stages.
Having previously relied heavily on results and expectations, Sabalenka explained that her mentality has evolved since winning her first Grand Slam title.
Rather than focusing on outcomes, the Belarusian now concentrates on extracting everything she can from herself regardless of the circumstances.
That change in approach has helped her remain composed through difficult moments and has become the foundation of her success.
“I just remember when I won my first Grand Slam all I was telling myself was if I am able to bring my fight and do my best with what I have at the moment I will have my opportunities,” Sabalenka explained.
“That was basically my mindset when I won the first Grand Slam.

“At this stage I am just trying to focus on myself, and when I am there I am fighting and competing and doing everything I can with what I have at the moment.
“Sometimes you have great days, and sometimes you feel like nothing is working and you have to fight.
“That is my mindset, basically that I am ready to do whatever it takes to get this beautiful trophy.”

Those comments help explain why Sabalenka has become such a formidable competitor in recent years.
Even against an opponent of Osaka’s calibre, the 28-year-old never appeared rattled and trusted the process that has taken her to the summit of the sport.
Sabalenka also took time to praise Osaka after their encounter, admitting she has huge admiration for the Japanese star’s return to the tour after becoming a mother.
The Belarusian believes Osaka is edging ever closer to rediscovering the level that once made her one of the most feared players in tennis.
“I feel like this year I am just getting to know her,” Sabalenka said.
“She is definitely a fighter and a great player. I am super happy to see her kind of back.

“Maybe not at her best tennis, but getting there.
“After giving birth, that is something unbelievable and inspiring.
“I am just happy to see her back and play matches against her.
“It is always a battle and always challenging, so I am just enjoying them.”
Sabalenka’s victory keeps her firmly on course for a maiden French Open title and a fifth Grand Slam title.
