The Offseason Conversation Has Shifted
With concerns that go well beyond a single postseason defeat, the Philadelphia 76ers formally begin the offseason.
This summer doesn’t seem to be focused on finding another fast roster fix or short-term tweak. Philadelphia is about to embark on one of the most significant off seasons of the Joel Embiid era following another postseason in which injuries, inconsistency, and depth issues reappeared at crucial junctures.
Even with all of this going on while the NBA Draft is still a huge topic of discussion within the company, identity may ultimately be the more significant issue. What precisely are the Sixers aiming to become in the future?
Philadelphia’s Biggest Problem Never Fully Disappeared
The Sixers have built their team for years with the goal of balancing immediate contention pressure with maximizing championship prospects around Joel Embiid.
However, the organization’s intentions now seem more obvious after another physically taxing season revealed well-known flaws throughout the rotation. Philadelphia requires younger legs, greater athleticism, more lineup flexibility, trustworthy frontcourt depth, and sustainable rotational balance which should all be in deep consideration for the upcoming NBA draft. The Sixers need a team that can withstand the physical strain of a full postseason run and not just a regular season one.
The Playoffs Exposed Familiar Weaknesses
Philadelphia still has elite players that can compete in the Eastern Conference. VJ Edgecombe’s long-term potential gives the team another intriguing asset going ahead, while Tyrese Maxey continues to develop into one of the franchise’s key players. However, the playoffs brought to light a number of persistent issues with the roster.
The Sixers occasionally had trouble with frontcourt depth following Embiid, defensive versatility, rebounding consistency, and rotational aggressiveness. Philadelphia frequently lacked the kind of long-term two-way depth that many remaining contenders continue to prioritize when injuries increased or lineups were stretched farther into postseason series. The 2026 NBA Draft suddenly has significantly more significance than it may have in prior years because of this truth.
Why the Draft Suddenly Matters More
Philadelphia now has the chance to add younger rotational players who can complement the team’s current core and help maintain long-term roster balance thanks to the No. 22 overall pick. A number of prospects are still showing up as viable options for the Sixers’ present course.

The 6-foot-8 Santa Clara forward averaged 11.8 points and 6.5 rebounds during his freshman season while bringing efficient scoring, positional versatility, and reliable floor spacing. Players with length and defensive flexibility have become increasingly valuable throughout the modern NBA postseason, particularly for teams searching for lineup versatility around star players. Graves’ skill set is a perfect fit for several of the areas Philadelphia has occasionally struggled in recent seasons.
This Offseason is about Sustainability
In the end, adding talent just to make another move doesn’t seem to be the main focus of this summer. It seems to be focused on establishing balance at last.
The Sixers still have enough elite players to compete in the Eastern Conference going future. However, following yet another season in which rotational depth, physicality, and durability became significant pressure points, Philadelphia’s future now seems more and more dependent on developing a more sustainable identity around the talents currently in place. Also, this offseason might be one of the organization’s best chances to begin creating it.
