Several unexploded World War II-era rockets were discovered in a sand dune on Nantucket, authorities announced Thursday.

The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad recently traveled to the island after reports of the unexploded military ordnance being found in the eroding dune, the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services said in a statement posted on Facebook.

Authorities identified the devices as several WWII-era rockets believed to have been used in training exercises, the department said.

Because the devices still posed a danger to the public, bomb technicians conducted a “controlled explosion” to neutralize the hazard before releasing the scene to local and state officials, according to the department.
