The death of Noida resident, Twisha Sharma, at her matrimonial home in Bhopal has triggered a major controversy, with her family accusing her husband and in-laws of prolonged mental and physical abuse, dowry harassment and using influence to weaken the investigation.
Twisha, 31, who was around two months pregnant, was found hanging at her home in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on the night of May 12. She had married Bhopal-based lawyer Samarth Singh, son of retired sessions judge Giribala Singh, in December 2025 after the two met through a dating application in 2024.
While police are probing the case as a suspected suicide, Twisha’s family has alleged foul play, claiming she was under severe distress in the months leading up to her death.
The case has since snowballed into a politically and legally sensitive matter, with allegations that the accused family attempted to influence proceedings.
DEATH AT HUSBAND’S HOME
According to police, Twisha was found hanging at her matrimonial home in Katara Hills late on May 12. Her husband Samarth Singh and mother-in-law Giribala Singh rushed her to a nearby hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Police said they received information about the case from hospital authorities at around 11 pm. No suicide note was recovered from the scene.
Officials said Twisha had remained in touch with her family till around 10 pm that night. Her relatives claimed she wanted to leave Bhopal and return to Noida shortly before her death.
DOWRY CASE REGISTERED, SIT FORMED
Following complaints from Twisha’s family, police registered a case against her husband and mother-in-law under provisions related to dowry death and dowry harassment under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Meanwhile, Bhopal Police has also announced a cash reward of Rs 10,000 for any information leading to Samarth Singh’s arrest.
A six-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) was subsequently constituted to probe multiple angles in the case, including allegations of dowry harassment, physical assault and possible destruction of evidence after Twisha’s death.
Twisha’s family has also demanded a second post-mortem and a court-monitored investigation, alleging injury marks were found on her body.
FAMILY ALLEGES MENTAL, PHYSICAL ABUSE
Twisha’s family have accused her husband and in-laws of sustained mental and physical harassment after marriage. According to the family, she was allegedly pressured over employment issues and her pregnancy.
Her family members also claimed Twisha had repeatedly expressed fear and emotional distress in the weeks before her death.
The family initially refused to perform her last rites, demanding strict action against the accused.
Twisha’s family also held a protest outside Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohav Yadav’s residence on Sunday, demanding that her body undergo a fresh post-mortem examination at AIIMS Delhi.
During the protest, her father, Navnidhi Sharma, and brother claimed they were assured of fair action by officials from the Chief Minister’s Office after meeting them. Sharma also warned that he would set himself on fire outside the Chief Minister’s residence if justice was denied.
The family has further demanded that Twisha’s body be preserved properly to facilitate the fresh post-mortem examination.
“We also requested that Twisha’s body be preserved at minus 4 degrees Celsius, as the current temperature of 4–5 degrees will lead to decomposition,” the victim’s father said.
‘JUDGE FAMILY USING INFLUENCE’
The case gained further attention after Twisha’s father alleged that the accused family was using its legal background and influence to secure relief from the courts.
Retired judge Giribala Singh secured anticipatory bail on Friday, while Samarth Singh also moved a court seeking anticipatory bail. However, his bail plea was rejected by a Bhopal court.
Speaking to India Today TV, Twisha’s father questioned how anticipatory bail was granted before the trial could begin. “The judge’s family is using their influence. This is very unfortunate. The law treats people according to their reputation,” he alleged.
He further claimed that granting anticipatory bail in such a case could set a “dangerous precedent”.
TWISHA’S LAST CHAT WITH MOTHER
WhatsApp conversations, accessed by India Today TV, revealed Twisha had allegedly been confiding in her mother about the distress she was facing inside her marital home.
In one message sent days before her death, she wrote: “Mujhe bahut zyada ghutan ho rahi hai maa (I feel suffocated, mother)”.
The chats suggested that Twisha felt emotionally trapped in the marriage and repeatedly wanted to return home.
On April 30, she reportedly questioned her mother about why she had been sent to Bhopal. She also alleged that her husband barely spoke to her while returning from the airport after one visit.
In other messages, she allegedly wrote: “I am extremely distressed… these people are despicable. They are suspicious of me. Samarth asks whose child I am carrying. My life has become a living hell. These people are very cruel. Samarth does not even speak to me properly”.
The chats have become a crucial part of the ongoing investigation.
FINAL CONVERSATION WITH FRIEND
Twisha’s last known conversation was reportedly with her friend Minakshi on Instagram shortly before her death.
According to details accessed by India Today TV, Twisha wrote: “I am trapped, bro. Bas tu mat phasna (You don’t get trapped). Can’t talk much. I’ll call when the time is right”.
Her friend replied expressing concern and support, telling Twisha she was worried about her and stood by her.
That call never came. The next day, Twisha was found dead.
WHAT IN-LAWS HAVE CLAIMED?
In her anticipatory bail application, retired judge Giribala Singh denied allegations against her family and instead alleged that Twisha had issues related to narcotic substance dependence and emotional instability.
Giribala Singh alleged Twisha died by suicide around 10 pm on May 12 by hanging herself from iron rods on the terrace of the house.
The bail plea claimed the family noticed behaviour suggestive of substance abuse soon after Twisha began living with them after marriage.
According to the application, Twisha allegedly displayed symptoms such as trembling hands, irritability and sudden mood swings whenever she was unable to consume narcotic substances.
The plea further claimed that Twisha had visited her parental home and other places several times between December 2025 and May 2026, during which such behaviour was observed.
The application also alleged that when the matter was discussed with Twisha’s father, he acknowledged that she consumed such substances.
Twisha’s family, however, has strongly rejected these allegations.
WHO WAS TWISHA SHARMA?
Twisha Sharma was a 33-year-old MBA graduate from Noida who had built a career in marketing and communications before her marriage.
She had worked in Delhi for several years and was also known for her involvement in beauty pageants and films. Twisha was a former Miss Pune and had appeared in the Telugu film Mugguru Monagallu.
