Tributes are flowing for much-loved hobby trainer Stephen Meyer who has died after a horrible accident at Scone on Friday.

The 71-year-old suffered horrendous injuries when he was kicked in the back by a horse ahead of the final race of the day, and could not be revived.

“A dedicated and highly regarded horseman from the Hunter North West district, Stephen was known for his integrity, work ethic, and deep lifelong love for thoroughbreds,” Racing NSW CEO Peter V’landys said

“Operating out of Tamworth, he achieved notable success with his stable star, Danza In The Dark, winner of the 2024 Walcha and Quirindi Cups.”

Meyer had taken Danza In The Dark to Scone, which still competed in the final race.

Channel 7’s Emma Freedman said it was “absolutely horrible news”.

“The very tragic passing of hobby trainer Stephen Meyer … an absolutely awful incident at Scone,” Freedman said.

“He will be fondly remembered and very much missed by everybody who knew him.

“We send our condolences to his family.”

V’landys said Meyer was a humble horseman who had wide respect across the industry.

“Every story he told always included a mention of a horse,” he said.

“Racing NSW extends its deepest condolences to Stephen’s family and many friends.”
