As Cleveland Browns quarter Shedeur Sanders prepares for his second season in the NFL, he’ll have a new head coach in Todd Monken. Fellow head coach, and Sanders’ father, Deion Sanders is now trying to meet with the new Browns leader.
When he does, Sanders says he wants to speak to Monken coach-to-coach, rather than as Shedeur’s dad. Still, there hasn’t been a confirmed date when the head coaches will meet up, via Garrett Bush’s podcast, h/t Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk.
“I was supposed to go, actually next week but I’ve got to shoot a commercial, to Cleveland to meet [Monken],” Sanders said. “Because I want to meet him. Because I think it’s vital that as a coach, not the dad, I can tell him a few things about [Shedeur], how to get him going.”
“That wasn’t asked of me a year ago. I don’t understand it,” he continued. “Even a guy like Travis Hunter being drafted to Jacksonville and I’ve had him for the last three [seasons], don’t you think you would want to talk to me to ask me what gets him going and what backs him off? You would want to know that. So, I anticipate, and I can’t wait to have that conversation with Coach Monken.”
Sanders will be battling Deshaun Watson for the right to be the Browns’ starting quarterback. Sanders is the incumbent, but Watson is way more expensive and coming off of injury. The position battle will be the most ballyhooed conversation throughout Cleveland’s offseason.
What Coach Prime has to say may not change the outcome of that battle. But it could give Monken a better sense of how to coach one of his new quarterbacks.
