Alba Caño scored her second goal of the season in the 40th minute to help the Boston Legacy earn a 1-1 draw against Gotham FC at Harrison, N.J., on Saturday night.

After losing their first five games, the Legacy are unbeaten in three straight (1-0-2).

While the Legacy’s lone win came against fellow expansion team Denver and they had an earlier tie against North Carolina, a team in the bottom half of the 16-team NWSL, this result came against the defending champions. Gotham had also already defeated Boston, 1-0, in the team’s first game on March 14.

Gotham went in front in the 37th minute off a turnover in the middle of the field. Jaelin Howell immediately got the ball back from Sarah Schupansky in space. Just inside the Legacy penalty box, Howell squared a pass to her left for Esther González. Legacy goalkeeper Casey Murphy dove to get her right hand on González’s shot, but Jaedyn Shaw was first to the rebound for her third goal of the season.

The Legacy only needed three minutes to pull even as Whitman-Hanson and Boston College graduate Sammy Smith intercepted a pass in the attacking third. She slipped a pass to Barbara Olivieri, who went to the left edge of the penalty box, beat a defender, and crossed for Caño, who stretched out to redirect the pass in off the far post.

Gotham had the best chance to break the deadlock in the second half as Howell had a bid through a maze of bodies in the 88th. Murphy made a late reaction save, knocking it away to her right and off the post. The left-footed rebound attempt from Katie Lampson was cleared off the line by Legacy defender Jorelyn Carabalí and out for a corner kick.

Boston will host Orlando on Tuesday at Gillette Stadium. It will be the Legacy’s last game in Foxborough until Aug. 31. They will play six straight home games at Centreville Bank Stadium in Pawtucket, R.I., beginning May 22 against Seattle.
