A wedding outing ended in tragedy in West Bengal’s Purulia district after a BJP functionary who left home on Thursday night was found dead the next morning, triggering allegations of a planned murder and fresh political tension in the state.
The body of 45-year-old Habulal Gop was recovered near Kanali village under Purulia Muffasil police station area on Friday morning, sending shockwaves through the locality.
Gop, a resident of Beldi village in Purulia district, was known in the area as an active BJP worker and served as the party’s Shakti Kendra Pramukh, according to local BJP leaders.
Family members said he had gone out on Thursday to attend a wedding ceremony. But by Friday morning, panic spread after locals spotted his body lying near the village area under suspicious circumstances.
Police rushed to the spot after receiving information and recovered the body for post-mortem examination. The remains were later sent to Purulia Government Medical College and Hospital.
FAMILY CRIES MURDER
As news of the death spread, grieving relatives accused unknown persons of killing Gop because of his political involvement.
“Habulal Gop was actively associated with the BJP. He has been murdered in a planned manner,” family members alleged, demanding immediate arrests and a fair probe into the incident.
The death also sparked outrage among BJP workers in the district, with members of the BJP Yuva Morcha reaching the area and pressing for strict action against those responsible.
Party supporters gathered near the village as tensions mounted over the circumstances surrounding the death.
POLICE BEGIN PROBE
Police have launched an investigation into the incident and are waiting for the post-mortem findings to establish the exact cause of death.
No arrests had been made till the filing of this report.
The incident has once again intensified the political atmosphere in West Bengal, where allegations over attacks on party workers frequently trigger fierce confrontation between rival camps.
