I pledge allegiance to nothing

I pledge allegiance to nothing

American bombs falling on people,

living, breathing,

each with a name

a story, a past

and somehow

no future

Is collateral acceptable?

While we drive our cars

Eat out, steak dinners

Complain about the price of gas

Make a big deal about the

exact temperature of the thermostat

The privilege of being upset

over nothing

Talking about “having a bad day”

while entire families are vaporized

While the internet watches the video

and laughs in the comments

Desensitized to the point of permanent anesthesia

Unmoved by children with faces like skeletons

Unmoved by dust covered hands reaching up to God from under rubble

Unmoved by an entire people being wiped off the face of Earth with high explosives

Moved by the algorithm

Moved by the economy

Moved by reality TV stars

Moved by the stock market

Moved by crypto

Moved by self interest

Moved by greed

Moved by cold hard bloody cash

The American dream is a stash

Who cares how many lives get smashed

Me first, you last

What is human life compared to the price of gas?
