Shaheen take silver in Monaco Sevens

Shaheen returned from the Monaco International Rugby Sevens with a silver medal after reaching the final of the tournament on May 2.

The UAE Rugby Federation side finished second after losing 35-14 to Seventies, the French champions, in the final.

Their place in the title match came after a strong group stage. Shaheen topped Group B with three wins from three.

They started with a narrow 14-12 win over Monaco, then beat Sevens Lands 26-17. They completed the group stage with a 33-17 victory over Wombats.

Under the tournament format, only group winners advanced to the final.

The event was attended by Prince Albert II of Monaco and Princess Charlene of Monaco. Mohamed Sultan Alzaabi, Secretary-General of the UAE Rugby Federation, and Dr Ayman Alnaeem, UAERF Board Member, were also present.

The UAE delegation presented the Federation shield to the Prince of Monaco during the tournament.

Shaheen were coached by Khouldoun Mlayah, with Yousef Shaker serving as assistant coach and Nizar Mehran as team manager.

“Reaching the final and securing the silver medal is a significant achievement and a positive step in the team’s ongoing development.”

Alzaabi said the tournament gave Shaheen valuable exposure against different rugby styles and a strong level of competition.

He said the group-stage results shows the work put in during preparation, plus the players’ physical and technical readiness.

He also praised their discipline and attitude across the tournament.

Alzaabi said the final against Seventies was an important test for the side, even though Shaheen were beaten.

The silver medal gives the UAE Rugby side a useful marker as they continue building towards future 7s competitions.
