Natasha Poonawalla’s Arpita Mehta sari set is a celebration of Kantha embroidery

Kantha is an ancient, eco-conscious embroidery tradition from Bengal, where old saris and dhotis were repurposed into layered textiles, hand-stitched together using a simple running stitch.

An ancient Bengali craft, Kantha uses the running stitch to layer old saris and dhotis into new textiles. These were not merely functional objects, but carried fragments of family histories across generations. With this look, as the designer notes, “that philosophy is preserved, bringing together fragments of lived histories with a fresh, contemporary perspective.” Each motif and stitch narrates a story, drawing from nature, daily life and folklore. Floral and vine patterns symbolise growth, while birds and animals evoke freedom and companionship. Elements like the sun, circles and mandalas reflect energy, protection and the cyclical nature of life, while fish motifs (significant in Bengali culture) represent abundance. “Conceptually, the look is envisioned to feel ethereal, modern, and fluid, while remaining deeply anchored in Indian textile heritage.”

Kapoor went maximalist with Poonawalla’s jewellery, putting together a look featuring custom earrings by Sri Paramani Jewels, designed in collaboration with Mehta, as the hero piece. These shoulder-dusters were paired with an emerald choker and earrings from Archana Aggarwal Timeless Jewellery. On her arms, a navratan bajubandh from Pooja Nigam, a tiger kada and peacock kada from The House of Rambhajos, a croc kada from Réja Gems, and traditional jadau pieces alongside a polki ring from Raniwala 1881 and a peacock ring also from Archana Aggarwal. A hairpin from Jagdish Jewellers and a custom clutch by Meera Mahadevia carried the ornamentation from hair to hand, giving the look one final layer of craft.
