Netflix’s Australian set and filmed thriller Apex is topping charts in more than 80 countries and drawing huge worldwide viewership for the streamer, showcasing locations across New South Wales and the ACT on a global stage.
Starring Hollywood royalty Charlize Theron in the lead, with Aussie Taron Egerton alongside her, the film leans on Theron performing much of the physical climbing herself, with that intensity now extending into a Sydney based experience inspired by the story.

Action thriller Apex climbed to No. 1 on the global English film list with 38.2 million views, grabbing No. 1 in 82 countries.
In the cat-and-mouse thriller, Charlize Theron is Sasha, a bereaved rock climber visiting the Blue Mountains of Australia, only to be ensnared in a twisted game with a cunning killer – played by Taron Egerton who thinks she’s prey.
Filmed in Australia, Apex utilised several impressive Australian locations as its primary backdrop including:
- Blue Mountains NSW: Many scenes were filmed throughout the Blue Mountains, including at Glenbrook Gorge, where the film’s climactic final scene takes place.
- The Needles (Engadine):This river location was used extensively, including the sequence in which Sasha attempts to stealthily move through the water before being caught in Ben’s trap, as well as the scene where Ben flips their canoe.
- Ginninderra Falls (Canberra): Featured prominently in the film’s dramatic cliff-jump sequence performed by Sasha.
Netflix has partnered with Climb Fit St. Leonards to present The Apex Challenge, a wild, head-to-head climbing contest inspired by the film and Theron’s remarkable real-life climbing skills.
Top competitors were invited to take part in a high-stakes battle against one another with Cameron Dillon being announced the winner.
