A disturbing incident from Madhya Pradesh’s Katni district has sparked outrage after a 108 ambulance staffer was accused of demanding money from a patient’s family and forcing them to clean the vehicle while the injured man battled for his life. The incident, captured on video, has gone viral on social media, prompting authorities to issue a notice to the ambulance driver.
According to officials, 32-year-old Rahul Barman was seriously injured in a road accident near Karela village and was brought to the district hospital in a 108 ambulance. After initial treatment, doctors referred him to Jabalpur due to his critical condition. However, during this time, the ambulance staffer – identified as Mohit – allegedly acted in an inhumane manner with the patient’s family.
In the viral video, a woman, identified as the patient’s wife, Pramila Barman, can be seen washing the ambulance while the staffer stands by. When asked what she is doing, she points to the driver saying that she is cleaning the vehicle on his instructions. The family has also alleged that money was demanded for transporting the patient.
The visuals have raised serious concerns about the functioning of emergency medical services, with many questioning whether life-saving systems are becoming a burden on patients’ families.
Taking cognisance of the video, Katni District Hospital Civil Surgeon Dr Yashwant Verma said a notice has been issued to the 108 in-charge and the ambulance driver, seeking a response within a week. He warned that strict action would follow if a satisfactory explanation is not provided.
