Forest Green Rovers have hit back at claims that a Morecambe supporter was kicked out of their stadium for munching on a bacon sandwich during Saturday’s match.
The National League club, famous for being the world’s first fully vegan football team since receiving Vegan Society certification in 2017, released a statement they cheekily titled “baconbuttygate” to set the record straight.
“Contrary to social media opinion and wisdom, the ejection was nothing to do with bacon sarnies more a little ‘over-exuberance’ on the last day of the season,” the club posted on X.
“After repeated warnings, the stewards were left with no choice and the gentleman was ejected from the stadium.”

Robbie Savage wasn’t having any of it either when the video started doing the rounds online.
Speaking on his BBC Radio 5 Live 606 show on Sunday, the Forest Green boss was pretty emphatic about the whole thing.
“I’ve seen that, it’s gone viral today. It’s fake news,” Savage said.
He went on to completely dismiss any suggestion that pork products were behind the fan’s removal from The New Lawn.
“It’s fake news, there was no bacon involved. I can 100% categorically confirm there was no bacon sandwich.”

So there you have it – straight from the manager’s mouth.
For those unfamiliar with the club, Forest Green have been trailblazers in sustainable football – they claim to have introduced the first vegan matchday menu in the sport back in 2015.
Pop along to The New Lawn and you’ll find Quorn pies, vegan pizzas, salads and sweet potato fries on offer rather than your traditional football grub.
Owner Dale Vince has also pushed to make the Gloucestershire outfit carbon neutral, championing renewable energy and sustainable products throughout the club.
On the pitch, things are looking rather rosy too – Savage’s side thumped Morecambe 5-0 on Saturday and now face Boreham Wood in the National League playoff quarter-finals on Wednesday.
