UAE rally racing shifts up a gear

Rally racing in the UAE continues to grow as a serious part of the country’s sporting calendar, with major desert events bringing competitors, teams and visitors to Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

The country has built its reputation through events such as the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge, Dubai International Baja, Abu Dhabi Baja Challenge and Liwa International Festival races.

The Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge remains the best-known of them. Founded in 1991 by Mohammed Ben Sulayem, the event is held across five stages in the Al Dhafra desert and is part of the World Rally-Raid Championship.

Its 35th edition is scheduled for November.

The Dubai International Baja has also become a regular stop for international drivers and riders. The event attracts competitors from more than 30 countries, with cars, motorcycles, quads and buggies all part of the competition.

Rallying in the UAE has changed sharply since the Dubai Desert Rally was launched in 1997. The sport later moved into the Baja format, helping open up more categories and routes for competitors.

Events now run across Al Dhafra, Al Ain and the Dubai desert, giving organisers varied terrain and giving spectators a closer look at the sport.

The Abu Dhabi Baja Challenge, organised by Abu Dhabi Sports Council with the Emirates Motorsports Organisation, has added another route for local and emerging talent. Prize incentives and competitive stages give drivers and riders a platform to test themselves.

The sport also supports tourism. Rally events put the UAE’s desert landscapes in front of international audiences and bring visitors into hotels, transport services and event operations.

The UAE has produced leading motorsport figures over several decades. Mohammed Ben Sulayem remains the country’s most prominent name in rallying, while Mohammed Al Balooshi has built a strong reputation on two wheels. Nora Al Jassasi is among the newer names coming through.

Officials said continued work on infrastructure, safety, sustainability and talent development will be needed if the UAE is to keep its place on the global motorsport calendar.
