Their first notes cracked a little
when folded — too fresh, too bright.
Hard to imagine now,
when most things pass with a tap,
a brief glow on a screen.
People on the footpath watched
as the family stepped out,
clothes stiff with ambition,
trying to guess if this rise
would last the season
or slip back into the dust.
