A case of suspected honour killing has emerged from Uttar Pradesh’s Maharajganj, where three brothers have been arrested for allegedly beating their 19-year-old sister to death with an iron rod after finding her with her lover.
The incident took place on Thursday night when one of the brothers returned home to find his sister with her lover, Ravi Kumar Gupta. Later, he called his two brothers and locked the couple in a room before attacking them with iron rods. The woman died on the spot. Gupta, severely injured, managed to escape. The brothers pursued him and beat him near his house, leaving him for dead.
After the murder, the brothers moved quickly to cover their tracks. On Friday morning, they loaded the woman’s body onto a pickup truck, drove to Sisai Ghat in Gorakhpur and cremated it. They returned home, cleaned the bloodstains, and burned their blood-stained clothes.
The crime came to light when Gupta, admitted to a hospital, revealed the details to his family.
Paniyara SHO Raghvendra Singh confirmed that the survivor’s family filed a complaint against the brothers, who were arrested on Saturday afternoon. The brothers are currently being questioned.
