Yates seals O Gran Camiño title for UAE Team Emirates

Adam Yates closed out overall victory at O Gran Camiño after finishing third on the fifth and final stage for UAE Team Emirates-XRG.

The British rider had taken control of the race with his win on stage four at Alto de Cabeza de Meda. From there, he did what he needed on the final day to keep the leader’s jersey and secure his first general classification title since the 2024 Tour de Suisse.

Alessandro Pinarello won stage five in 3 hours, 39 minutes and 3 seconds. Jørgen Nordhagen was second, one second behind, with Yates crossing in third on the same time after the climb to Monte Trega.

That was enough for Yates to finish 32 seconds clear of Nordhagen in the final standings, with Pinarello third at 48 seconds.

It completed a strong week for the Emirati team. Julius Johansen had opened the race by taking his first professional win on stage one, and Yates then delivered the overall title after a steady ride through the time trial and the mountains. The team has now reached 21 wins for the 2026 season.

Yates said the team had chosen a measured approach on the final climb.

“It was a hard climb today,” he said. “Actually it was quite short and it was not super steep. But the wind coming from the ocean made it quite difficult, so I decided to play it a little safe and keep the pace quite high on the front.”

“I just did my pace and then I knew it would be difficult for the other guys to attack. I am happy to finish it off.”

Yates said he had enjoyed the race and was now turning his attention to the Giro d’Italia.

“Now I have to go back to altitude and make some final preparations, and then it is the Giro,” he said. “We are going to go there with quite a strong team, and some options.

“We know the competition will be quite strong so I think it is better we go there with a few options. First you have to have the legs, and then hopefully the result will come.”

There was more good news for the wider UAE set-up on Saturday, as Daan Dijkman won the under-23 Liège-Bastogne-Liège for UAE Team Emirates Gen Z.

The 18-year-old Dutch rider, in his first year at under-23 level, was part of the day’s break with 86km remaining. Even after that move was brought back late on, he still had enough left to win the sprint from a front group of 23 riders.

Dijkman finished in 4:04:58, ahead of Jack Ward of Lidl-Trek Future Racing and Jesper Stiansen of Tudor Pro Cycling Team U23.

It was another notable result for a rider who made his WorldTour debut with UAE Team Emirates-XRG at the AlUla Tour in January. He is due to link up again with the senior squad at next week’s Vuelta Asturias.
