Justin Longmuir full of praise for Jye Amiss after career-best showing in Fremantle Dockers’ western derby win

Fremantle forward Jye Amiss’ dominant five-goal haul during Sunday’s western derby just one week after his clutch goal against Collingwood was a superb reward for his efforts over many years, according to coach Justin Longmuir.

Amiss was the best forward on the ground, kicking 5.4 and taking a club record nine marks inside 50 as Fremantle beat West Coast 14.13 (97) to 5.11 (41).

Often criticised for the way he plays in a three-pronged key forward set up, Longmuir said Amiss was showing everyone what he is made of.

“Throughout all the challenges he’s had, he’s always been positive. He’s always kept working on his game. He’s got his feedback internally, and it’s good to see him get some of the rewards,” Longmuir said.

“Young key forwards go through their ups and downs, and have to build on their game and get presented different challenges as their careers unfold. And that’s what I’ve seen from Jye. In the first couple of rounds, he probably didn’t take his opportunities and we probably didn’t kick the ball well to him, but I think he’s had pretty solid season.

“It just doesn’t happen like that all the time though. I think we’ve got forward line that function well together and they share the load. JT didn’t hit the scoreboard today, and JT probably gets the best match up. Then the other two kick eight goals between them.

“On the clutch bit, Jye has actually stood up for us a lot under under pressure. Whether it be kicking goals when we need them in the last quarter, which is obvious part.

“But throughout last year, there were a lot of times when we just needed a contest from him on the wing, when the opposition were coming at us, or he was two v one against, and he was just able to get it done. So he’s done that a lot.”

Longmuir was also full of praise for Glendinning-Allan medallist Jordan Clark saying his 27 disposals off half-back were crucial to Fremantle’s win.

“I thought he was super. I think he was disappointed in his game last week. He’s a very proud player. I thought he got himself in great positions to defend which allows him to be used offensively a lot. Then I thought majority of the time he used the ball well. I think voting was pretty even, but from where I was sitting it was between those two (Clark and Amiss),” he said.
